St. Croix Refinery Closes

Cut-throat competition among suppliers of petroleum products and cumulative losses of $1.3 billion over the last three years have resulted in the permanent closure of the 350,000 barrel per day St. Croix refinery in the US Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. The refinery, run by Hovensa — a joint venture of Petroleos de Venezuela (PDV) and US oil firm Hess — has been a large supplier of gasoline, diesel and residual fuel to New York Harbor and markets as far away as Europe.
