Mongolia Eyes Gas Transit Role

Echoing a proposal considered in the late 1990s, Mongolia has put itself forward as a potential transit route for Russian pipeline gas shipments to China. Russia’s Gazprom hopes to send 30 Bcm/yr of gas direct to northwest China via its Altai pipeline system from 2015. But Mongolian President Tsakhia Elbegdorj told Bloomberg that routing the pipeline through Mongolia instead would ultimately prove 1,000 km shorter and allow coal-reliant Mongolia to switch to gas heating in its capital, Ulan Bator.
