Uruguay's state energy firm Ancap has launched a long-planned bid round for 15 offshore exploration blocks. The government hopes the terms will attract foreign producers, but officials acknowledge that Uruguay remains a high-risk play and that success is by no means guaranteed. The bid round, launched with much fanfare in Montevideo last week, includes acreage in the Punta del Este, Pelotas and Oriental del Plata basins. The blocks on offer range from shallow to ultra-deep waters.
