Belgian gas grid operator Fluxys could face a flood of compensation claims after a court of appeal found it guilty of causing involuntary homicides and injuries in a pipeline blast in western Belgium in July 2004. A total of 24 people were killed and 132 injured in the disaster, caused by a pipeline explosion and fire in Ghislenghien. Fluxys, which was acquitted at an earlier trial in February 2010, must pay a fine of ?264,000 ($377,810), as well as for the publication of notices detailing the verdict in four Belgian newspapers to be named by the court in the next month (IOD Nov.30'10). The ruling said Fluxys neglected its supervisory and risk-management duties.
