One day after receiving approval from the US House or Representatives, the Senate ratified a 2012 defense bill which includes provisions for sanctioning Iran’s central bank (IOD Dec.16’11). The vote now sends the bill to the White House for President Obama to sign into law, a move which a spokesman indicated he would do despite previous discussion of a veto. Obama’s approval would put to rest weeks of negotiation between the White House and Congress over the severity of central bank sanctions, with focus likely to shift to proper implementation to avoid hurting key US allies.
