Top Russian gas independent Novatek on Friday claimed it had set a new record for the longest use of the Arctic Northern Sea Route after its ninth condensate cargo moved into the Pacific Ocean en route to Asia-Pacific markets. The Perseverance tanker passed through the Bering Strait — which separates Russia from Alaska — with a 60,000 metric ton car- go late last week, meaning this year's naviga- tional period stretched to November — and five months in total — largely thanks to Arc- tic ice cover decreasing at an unprecedented rate (IOD Jul.8'11). The same vessel was the first to make the voyage this year, leaving the Russian port of Murmansk in late June.
