The UK has replaced Spain as Europe's biggest LNG importer, and the world's thirdbiggest after Japan and South Korea. French bank Societe Generale declared as much in its LNG Special this week, and data from International Oil Daily sister publication World Gas Intelligence show that the UK has imported over 20% more than Spain in cargo terms so far in 2011, lending credence to SocGen's forecast that the UK will retain the top European position for the full year. Its senior gas analyst, Thierry Bros, pinpoints reduced Spanish demand and the new Medgaz pipe from Algeria as factors in Spain's LNG decline. Spain had been Europe's biggest LNG market since 2003.
