Rio Tinto Pulls Out of Jordan

Rio Tinto has halted its uranium exploration efforts in Jordan, the company confirmed Thursday, less than two years after it entered into an exploration joint venture with Jordan Energy Resources, Inc. (Jeri), the commercial arm of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (Jaec). The companies had been prospecting in the south of Jordan, but Jeri head Fakhruddin Daghestani said in December that it was "nothing serious." London-based Rio Tinto has long been one of the world's top uranium producers thanks to its two mines in Namibia and Australia, but its greenfield exploration has been almost entirely limited to Jordan.
