Mexico is gradually replacing power plants that burn fuel oil and diesel with cleaner natural gas-fired plants, but the transition may increase pressure on the country's gas market. Demand for electricity is projected to grow at an annual rate of 3.3% from now until 2017, according to the energy ministry's 2008- 17 forecasts, although a deeper-than-expected economic downturn may slow this down.
