Young designers who want to make history had better be prepared to think small. Lots of them are already doing that. Each year, Michelin issues an automotive design challenge open to anyone. For 2008, the theme was "Smaller. Safer. Better." The challenge was to design small, energy-efficient vehicles that were safe, and if they pleased the eye, all the better. Entries were received from everyone from high school students to design professionals. The winners - eight scale models and 18 illustrations - were chosen by a panel of automotive designers and design educators. All winners were displayed this year at the Detroit auto show alongside three full-sized concept vehicles that met the criteria: the Citroen C-SportLounge, Nissan Effis and Dodge Hornet.
