Indian coal shortage persists despite demand dip

India faces a combined shortage of about 155mn t of thermal and coking coal for the current 2013-14 fiscal year ending March even as demand eases back. Consumption of coal in 2013-14 will fall by 3mn t from a year earlier to 770mn t as a decade-low 5pc economic growth dampens demand for electricity. Demand grew by 11pc from a year earlier in 2012-13, India’s minister of state for coal, Pratik Prakash Bapu Patil, said in parliament yesterday.
