Direct markets for Central Appalachian steam coal fell by about $2/short ton this week as natural gas futures sank back below $3/mmBtu, and traders and other suppliers with long positions made spot sales below $50/short ton. Prompt over-the-counter (OTC) deals for Central App rail and barge coals were done at $47-48/st, touching more than five-year lows for some specifications. The sharp decline in US thermal coal exports in the past year has intensifired after several large term contracts expired at the end of 2014.
