Bill proposed to halt e-waste exports

U.S. lawmakers have introduced a bill in Congress to prevent American entities from dumping electronic waste (e-waste) in developing countries, reigniting a debate between environmental and industry groups. The bill proposes a new category of "restricted electronic waste" that cannot be exported from the United States to developing nations and allows used equipment to be exported for reuse if fully functional. Reps. Gene Green (D., Texas) and Mike Thompson (D., Calif.) presented the Responsible Electronics Recycling Act Wednesday, noting that the legislation also aims to promote domestic recycling jobs.
