A complicating factor regarding the observed effects of ouabain on the activity of the alpha_2-NKA relates to the specificity of ouabain for inhibiting NKA activity alone. It has been known for several years that low concentrations of ouabain alter the proliferative state of vascular smooth muscle (3). More recently, this response has been delineated to an activation of Src kinase signaling, which is dependent on molecular interactions between Src and the NKA (29).
