ERs exist in the hearts of both humans and rodents. Generally, they are nuclear receptors that act as transcription factors to initiate a genomic response following estrogen binding. However, the cardiac (and vascular) effects of estrogen and related ER modulators described above are rapid (several seconds to minutes), and so it is unlikely that they are mediated by a modulation of transcription. Indeed, rapid responses (of endothelial cells) to estrogen occur in the presence oftranscrip-tional inhibitors (2).
