Agricultural groups are wary of the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s (APHIS) plan to revamp its regulatory framework for genetically modified crops, questioning the need for the overhaul and voicing concern that the effort may needlessly expand the agency’s authority and disrupt trade with foreign markets. “There is no need for the agency to replace a mature, well-functioning regulatory system with an entirely new one, in the absence of clear justification,” according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.
