摘要

A bipartisan group of members of the US House of Representatives has reintroduced legislation to block states from requiring labels on genetically modified foods and to set up a voluntary federal GM food labelling standard. The industry-supported bill marks a renewed bid by lawmakers to end the controversy over GM food labelling, but its prospects are questionable and labelling advocates say that they will strive to keep it from becoming law. Still, there is clear interest among lawmakers from both parties for a federal solution to the GM food labelling issue and the bill is likely to be the focal point of future debate. The legislation, introduced on March 25th by Representatives Mike Pompeo and G K Butterfield and co-sponsored by an additional nine Republicans and eight Democrats, largely mirrors a bill the two lead authors put forth last year.
