Somatic embryogenesis in banana is considered of great promise for the mass propagation of this crop. However, the limited availability of embryogenic competent tissues, together with the possible occurrence of somaclonal variation in suspension-derived plants, has restricted its commercial application. Recently, in vitro proliferating inflorescences have been proposed as a new source of competent explants for the establishment of regenerable embryogenic cell suspensions. The present work focuses on the behavior of the first plants produced with this novel methodology. 'Dwarf Cavendish' banana plants of the local selection 'Gruesa' were regenerated, acclimatized and established in the field. Phenological, morphological and productive parameters were evaluated during the first production cycle under commercial greenhouse conditions in the Canary Islands.
