Labour law must be reviewed, migrant labour and unrest, mine of future' launch soon

SOUTH AFRICA'S LABOUR RELATIONS ACT needs radical reform by way of a Wiehahn-type commission of inquiry into labour legislations, two separate and different organisations believe. Read on pages 8 and 9 of this edition of Mining Weekly of labour lawyer John Brand's insight and on page 13 for that of the labour union Solidarity. It was the Wiehahn Commission that paved the way for the registration of black labour unions in apartheid South Africa in the late seventies and early eighties at a time when the country was also in a labour dilemma. Brand believes that something similar must be done now to prevent more Marikana-type tragedies.
