Closing the student intake-to-graduate ratio

The University of the Witwatersrand's (Wits') School of Mining has achieved its aim of increasing the number of first-year intakes for its mining engineering programme and is now focusing on closing the gap between the number of first-year students progressing through the programme and the number of graduates produced. There has been a significant increase in first-year student intakes, from 43 students in 1999, to 233 in 2011. In 2010, the mining school produced 68 graduates out of 158 students registered for the four-year mining engineering programme in 2007, says School of Mining head Professor Fred Cawood.
