Alden to open new specialty met coal mine in eastern Kentucky

Alden Resources, a Central Appalachian specialty coal producer, plans to open a new metallurgical surface mine in Whitley County, Kentucky, after receiving a permit from the Kentucky Department of Natural Resources, a company official said Tuesday. The mine will produce Blue Gem coal from a 24-inchthick seam, she added. Blue Gem is extremely high-quality coal found only in parts of four southern Kentucky and northeastern Tennessee counties.
