TVA to retire 470-MW Widows Creek coal unit in Alabama

The Tennessee Valley Authority will shut down, no later than October, the remaining coalfired unit at the Widows Creek power plant near Stevenson, Alabama, a top TVA executive said Thursday. The 470-MW unit is the victim of the US Environmental Protection Agency’s coal combustion residual rule, published in final form in late April, said Chip Pardee, TVA’s chief operating officer, in his report to the federal power producer’s board of directors. The board unanimously approved the closure at its quarterly meeting Thursday in Huntsville, Alabama. “Unit 7’s lifespan is dependent on its ability to store ash,” Pardee said to the board.
