Evaluation of sampling techniques for coal-ash leachate and 'red water' seeps at TVA's Widows Creek steam plant

The purpose of this study was to develop methods to sample ash deposits in-situ and to evaluate those methods in terms of the quality of data generated and to quantify the spatial and temporal variability of the leachate data. Chemical speciation calculations were also performed to determine if the concentrations of measured species were reasonable and to give insight into the solid species controlling the solubility of the parameters investigated. An additional purpose was to develop a sampling technique to enable the collection of red water samples prior to their exposure to air and to analyze those samples to characterize in-situ red water.
