COMPETITIVE pressures in the pharmaceutical fine chemicals industry were relentless in 2004,with Asian players gaining further acceptance in the marketplace and the main customer base,the pharma industry,grappling with both an ever-thinning late-stage pipeline and heightened public scrutiny over the safety and cost of drugs.Despite the ongoing challenges,the overall health of the fine chemicals industry appeared to at least stabilize as companies benefited from earlier restructuring efforts and began to devise real strategies on how to deal with Asian competition.
