Don't abandon gas pipeline project in Tamil Nadu: Chemical Industries Association '

Chemical Industries Association (CIA), an industry body representing chemical firms based in Chennai, has urged Gas Authority of India Ltd. (Gail) not to abandon its natural gas pipeline project in Tamil Nadu. Gail's Chairman had recently stated that the company could abandon the Tamil Nadu portion of the Kochi-Koot-tanad-Bangalore-Mangalore natural gas pipeline project, if the Tamil Nadu Government did not give its decision on granting permission for installation of pipeline running through the state within a month. "Though, on the face of it, this statement appears like a deadline given to Tamil Nadu Government by Gail, this appears to really reflect on the genuine anxiety of the Gail on the matter. Perhaps, the Gail's Chairman is thinking that future of this pipeline project should be decided one way or the other without further loss of time, so that Gail can chalk out alternate action plans," CIA said in a press state- ment. However, Mr. P. K. N. Panicker, President and Mr. N. S. Venkataraman, Secretary of CIA, rebuked Gail authorities for not caring to ascertain the views of the agricultural community in Tamil Nadu before laying the pipelines.
