A steering committee of the Planning Commission, set up to finalise the 12th Plan on health, has recommended a number of measures including creation of Central Drug Authority (CDA), weeding out of irrational Fixed Dose Combinations (FDCs), and effective e-govemance system to bolster the regulatory mechanism for the drugs."Health Ministry shouldencourage public and patient education in the appropriate use of drugs, particularly antibiotics and antimicrobials, since it would benefit individual patients and public health. E-govemance systems should interconnect all licensing and registration offices and laboratories; GPS based sample collection systems and online applications for licensing should be introduced. A repository of approved formulations at both State and national levels should be developed," the report of the committee said.
