Selenium in Parent Materials and Soils of Novosibirsk Oblast

The content and distribution of selenium in soils of Novosibirsk oblast have been investigated. Soils with of possible anomalous selenium content are mapped. Selenium is one of the most peculiar chemical elements in the geosphere and biosphere. It partially resembles sulfur and tellurium, but its behavior in the geosphere and functions in the biosphere are very specific [1]. Selenium is a trace element whose dietary deficiency or excess in man and animals leads to serious diseases [2]. The role of selenium in the environment is largely determined by the narrow interval of its content in the nutrition of man and animals above which this element has toxic properties and below which it is already deficient [3].
