Optical fiber cords that are reinforced with tension resisting fibers and jacket and are expected to become widely used for interior wiring and equipment wiring in offices and residential buildings. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has been used as the primary sheathing material for optical fiber cords. However, it is apprehensive about the influence on environment that PVC emits chlorine gas during combustion, as well as dioxins, under certain combustion conditions. Thus the requests to non-halogen are mounting. Therefore, we proceeded to optimize a base material and a metal hydroxide as flame-retardant compounding amount, we developed a Non-Halogen Frame-Retardant (NH-FR) optical fiber cord that satisfies all of the flame-retarding characteristics, optical transmission characteristics, and mechanical property requirements as conventional PVC.
