Stereospecific living polymerization of butadiene has been achieved by using samarocene/co-catalyst systems (e.g., (C_5Me_5)_2Sm (THF)_2/MMAO). Other lanthanide-metallocene systems (Ln=Pr, Nd, Gd) were also effective for the polymerization. Especially, (C_5Me_5)_2GdMe_2 AlMe_2/MMAO system gave a polybutadiene with extremely high 1,4-cis selectivity (99.3 percent) in a high yield at high polymerization temperature.
