This project was initiated in 2004, and has been developed progressively in phases. The latest system enhancement phase has been tested and incorporated as an integral part of a full Escalator Condition Monitoring previously developed. In 1998 a failure of an escalator main drive shaft at Oxford Circus Station, where some passengers were injured, resulted in a very serious safety incident. This highlighted the need to evaluate the complete asset to ascertain the condition of each main drive shaft. Traditional NDT methods were labour-intensive, costly and did not provide a complete evaluation with respect to potential fatigue failures. Designs were re-visited and a long-term program implemented. The principal objective was to reduce the risk of escalator main drive shaft fatigue failure by developing a suitable method in which to establish and continuously monitor the real condition.
