Range and ecology of the rufous-bellied woodpecker Dendrocopos hyperythrus subrufinus in Ussuriland and in adjacent China

The rufous-bellied woodpecker, Dendrocopos hyperythrus subrufinus, was included in avifauna of Russia in 1966. The first evidence of its breeding was obtained in 1985. This species is one of the least known birds in the southern Far East. The material was collected in southern Khabarovsk Territory (near the village of Malishevo) during the breeding seasons of 1985-1986 and 1991-1996. Based on the author's and literary data, geographical distribution and a possible pattern of resettlement of the bird are discussed. Details of the species biology, behavior and habitats (mixed deciduous forest composed of oak and aspen) are given. Drumming and acoustic association as well as its nest-hollow are described. The reasons for including the rufous-bellied woodpecker in The Russian Red Book are substantiated.
