Continuing advances in wireless technology have enabled the proliferation of smaller, cheaper, and mobile computers, imposing challenging demands on mobile ad hoc networking. The much larger size wireless networks become available such as sensor networks and ad hoc networks in the ubiquitous computing environments. Magnifying network size increases the overhead of its networking drastically. Consequently, a primary focus on the design of ad hoc routing protocols is the scalability for the networks with large number of nodes and rapid and frequent topology changes. In this paper, we propose Lightweight Forwarding with Heuristic Edge Traversal (LiFE) based on the geometric ad hoc routing algorithms, introducing an approximate and heuristic approach to accelerate forwarding process and guarantee the packet delivery without the assumptions about network topology. LiFE presents better performance with higher packet delivery success rate and less overhead than Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) and Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing (GPSR).
