Multicast communication over mobile ad hoc networks becomes popular. Dependable and scalable multicast routing protocol is required for large mobile ad hoc networks, even though network size and node mobility continue to increase. However, the data packet delivery becomes less dependable due to radio interference and frequent route breaks as the hop count between the source node and the multicast group member increases. In large mobile ad hoc network environment, data packets must be delivered through multiple routes to achieve the high data delivery, while the high overhead to forward massive data packets in the network can be incurred. Therefore, this paper proposes a hierarchical multicast routing protocol using adaptive inter-cluster data forwarding configuration mechanism to efficiently deliver data packets using multiple routes. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme provides the high data delivery and mitigates the overhead for large mobile ad hoc networks.
