Dye-doped liquid crystals in the mesophase have been exhibit extremely large laser-induced refractive index change originating in various mechanisms including photothermal photochemical reaction. optical electric field, and photo-induced space charge field. In this study, optical nonlinearity originating in photothermal effects in dye-doped liquid crystals was characterization by both Kirchhoff's diffraction theory and heat conduction analysis. Our analytical technique was available for describing the photothermal nonlinear phenomena including nonlinear coefficients and response characteristics.
