In the past and the present different isolated solutions instead of a homogenous information landscape have dominated the area of data storage. Starting from the problem of the integration and federation of different heterogeneous data into information systems, the necessity of homogenous data access has evolved. Attention must be paid not only to the technical composition, but also to content based, semantic data integration. In the sense of a flexible and service driven architecture, web services gain more and more importance in this context. They are the basis for loose coupling and integration of applications and information systems. For the creation of intelligent, dynamic web services it is necessary to extend the concepts of web services with an additional semantic layer and to bind it to the semantic web.
