As alternative energy sources to fossil fuels, natural energy sources have been considered, such as solar energy, wind power energy, water power energy, and ocean current / tidal current energy, hi particular, ocean current / tidal current energy is expected to be effective as a sustainable energy source because of its independence of both season and weather in comparison with solar energy and wind power energy. Seawater magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) power generation is a unique system that not only directly transforms the kinetic energy of an ocean current / tidal current into electric energy, but also generates hydrogen gas as a by-product. It is great importance for an oceanic country such as Japan to establish an energy transformation system based on the sustainable ocean current / tidal current energy as a source of alternative energy.
