摘要

Current status of plant cell culture and use of plant cultured cell, callus, as a tool of production of substances are reviewed. Biotransformation of exogenous substrates is more promising for producing or modifying some compounds with cultured cell. The most attractive characteristic of the system is that it can be regio- and stereoselectively catalyzed various reactions under mild conditions; on pharmacological point of view, glycosylation and hydroxylation are specifically valuable. It is also advantageous that experimental trial with suspended callus system can be carried out with less labor and relatively high throughput; it allows the chemist to hunt "treasures ".
