Engineers around the world are putting critical product data to good use. How? By using product data management (PDM) software that is designed for use with the leading computer-aided design (CAD) programs. These sophisticated applications provide a link to enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and efficiently transmit the information to manufacturers, suppliers, and customers. PDM handles engineering processes including design geometry, project plans, part files, assembly diagrams, analysis results, bills of material, specifications, engineering change orders, parts classifications, and authorization. On the other hand, ERP encompasses various aspects of the production process including inventory control, shop scheduling, capacity planning, purchasing, sales, accounting, and human resources. SAP America Inc., Oracle Corp., J.D. Edwards Co., and IFS North America are just a few of the companies that offer ERP systems. Also, legacy systems designed in-house are still widely used.
