Data are presented of Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements of iron in an ordinary chernozem, dark and light chestnut soils, solod, and dernopodzolic soil. The bivalent iron content was related to the size of the elementary soil particles; it was a minimum in the clay fraction. The Mehra-Jackson extract partially dissolved iron-containing aluminosilicates and non-ferric compounds, in addition to non-silicate iron. The phase conversion for magnetically ordered minerals is in the order: magnetite maghaemite haematite iron hydroxides.
