To provide a β-oxy iron hydroxide-based compound powder capable of forming a magnetic powder capable of producing a magnetic recording medium having good SNR and excellent film strength of a magnetic layer, a β-oxy iron hydroxide-based compound sol, a method for producing a ε-iron oxide-based compound powder, and a method for producing the magnetic recording medium.SOLUTION: Provided are a powder of a β-oxy iron hydroxide-based compound which is an aggregate of particles of a β-oxy iron hydroxide-based compound represented by the following formula (1), in which the surface of the particles of the β-oxy iron hydroxide-based compound is modified with a surface modifier, and the zeta potential when the particles are dispersed in water to form a sol is + 5 mV or more at pH 10 [In formula (1), A represents at least one metallic element other than Fe, and a satisfies 0≤a1]; and applications thereof.SELECTED DRAWING: None
