摘要

The methods of assessing soil loss tolerance as a quantitative standard for evaluating the erosion hazard are considered. The majority of methods take into account natural process (normal erosion) as well as economical and environmental considerations. The most accurate, although not easily realizable, approach is the evaluation of permissible soil loss by the rate of soil formation. The method of 'equilibrium profile' is proposed as an alternative to the existing approaches. This method is based on the assumption that there is a zone on the slope where the rate of erosion is equal to the rate of pedogenesis. Thus, soil loss tolerance can be assessed by measuring the erosion truncation in this zone.
