Phylogenetic relationships among anadromous chars of the genus Salvelinus based on restriction endonuclease analysis of nuclear DNA.

Phylogenetic relationships among five anadromous char species of the genus Salvelinus (Salvelinus malma, S. albus, S. leucomaenis, S. taranetzi, and S. levanidovi) were studied on the basis of comparative analysis of repetitive nuclear DNA sequences. The results of phenetic cladistic analysis suggest a monophyletic origin of these species and confirm the assumption on the divergence of the common char ancestor into two phylogenetic groups: Pacific (S. malma, S. albus, S. leucomaenis and others) andArctic (S. taranetzi, S. levanidovi and others). S. levanidovi, which evolutionarily belongs to the Arctic group, is probably the closest to the common ancestor of the genus. The sequence of taxon divergence is discussed.
