News from the power generation sector should bode well for natural gas in the future, but any growth will be accompanied by challenges. A recent report by the Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator drew attention to the need to expand pipeline infrastructure while Upper Midwest electric power plants increase their use of gas for generation. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has projected that 60% of new generation capacity between now and 2035 will be natural gas. This equates to 135 GW for gas compared to 14 GW for coal, 25 GW for wind power and 28 GW from other renewable energy sources.
