Elevated serum IgA autoantibodies to tissue transglutaminase (anti-tTG IgA) is most characteristic for celiac disease (CD), and is often used as an initial screening for CD. Selective IgA deficiency (SIgAD) may cause false negative serum celiac serological test results. Therefore many laboratories exclude SIgAD in these patients by measuring total serum IgA in all samples. It has been proposed that low serum anti-tTG IgA may be used to identify SIgAD. The purpose of the present study was to test the hypothesis that undetectable serum anti-tTG IgA with the fully automated EliA~(TM) Celikey~R on ImmunoCAP 250 (Phadia) indicates SIgAD.
