Methods for sighting survey of marine mammals are reviewed in this article. Sighting surveys play an important role in conservation and management of marine mammals because they provides data for abundance estimation as well as habitat modelling. There are 3 traditional sighting survey methods:(1)shipboard, (2) aerial and (3)land based surveys. Most of shipboard and aerial surveys are designed and conducted based on line transect sampling. Correct species identification, individual count, and measurements of angles and distances to sightings are key elements of these surveys. Applications of new technologies such as UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) and satellite image are underway to count marine mammals.
