摘要

Geological storage of anthropogenic CO_2 under the seabed is a prospective component of the emission mitigation strategy. Although technical and legal maturities have been achieved for offshore CO_2 storage, gaining the public's acceptance is a key issue for its further deployment. Potential risks, economics and possible environmental impacts would stall the development of such projects. Much concern stems from the possibility of CO_2 leakage from the reservoir to the marine environment. However, the probability of leakage is extremely unlikely for a carefully selected reservoir and monitoring and remediation options are more than capable of stopping leaks and preventing impacts on the environment. Information sharing among worldwide projects will be helpful to promote offshore CO_2 storage in future.
