新潟県粟島におけるオオミズナギドリの現状と生態

Streaked shearwater Calonectris leucotnelas is the major Procellariifomes seabird breeding in Japan. The breeding population of streaked shearwaters in Awa-Island increased from 20000 in 1990 to 84000 in 2010. Domestic cats were often observed in the colony, so the controle of cats should be carried out. The eco-tour including the shearwaters watching was performed as the co-operative program of researcher and islanders to make some profits from shearwaters and to promote its conservation. Streaked shearwaters foraged pelagic fish (Engraulis japonica. Auxis rochei) around Awa- island or in the Pacific coast of Hokkaido where food availability would be high. Male foraged in both areas while females tended to forage around Awa-island. It is important to keep the long-term monitoring system for examin-ing the effects of long-term ocean ecosystem change or gathering the basic information for the conserva-tion of this species.
