摘要

We investigated the two-dimensional cavity modes of two types of quasi-stadium laser diodes operating under unstable resonator conditions. First we discuss the lasing characteristics of a laser diode with convex ends and point out that the convex end cavity configuration induces intensely focused spots within the laser cavity, where the great optical nonlinearity may produce undesirable effects that obstruct high power operation. Next we calculated the cavity modes of a new type of quasi-stadium laser with the concave ends. Just like the laser with the convex ends, the results showed that the cavity modes show significant wavelength dependence on the beam interference, and a scar mode localized on an unstable periodic orbit was observed. However, we found a remarkable difference: the concave ends do not produce any intensely focused spots in the laser cavity, which means that higher-power operation is possible.
