The mechanical properties in thick sections andchilling in thin sections of low sulfur spherodial graphite cast ironwere investigated. Chilling could not be eliminated in thin sectionby Mg addition, bu tcould be eliminated by combining Mg and RE.However, the range of the amount of RE added for eliminatingchilling was extremely limited for extremely low sulfur melt. Inspheroidal graphite cast iron containing chilling was extremelylimited for extremely low sulfur melt. In spheroidal graphite castiron containing Mg and RE, the high tensile strength of 500Mpa orabove in thick sections (Φ30mm) was obtained without chilling. For the extremely low sulfur cast iron, excellent elongation was obtained.
