Diagnosis for condition of spray cooling water using acoustic sensor in continuous casting process of iron and steel industry

A new spray check system using an acoustic sensing method, which makes it possible to judge the condition of second cooling water in a continuous casting machine of the iron and steel industry, was developed. This measuring system has the advantages of high accurate measurement, durability in difficult surroundings, ease of operation and lack of influence of casting time during measurement. The spray check system was applied to continuous casting machines for slab products. Confirmation of measurement repeatability and durability of on-line use over a long period, and comparison between the actual condition of sprayed water and human judgement using this method were carried out. Good repeatability of measured data, good correspondence with the actual condition of sprayed water and good durability of on-line use over a long period were confirmed. It was also confirmed that abnormal spray condition (blockage inside a nozzle, blockage in a distributing pipe or incorrect direction of sprayed water) could be detected using this method. This spray check system will be utilized in continuous casting machines of the iron and steel industry, and is expected to contribute to their stable operation and the casting of good quality products.
